reach an accommodation on.
I can negotiate. I m trained. By the way, I ll probably curse a blue streak if
someone s rude to you. Just thought you should know. Katie blew Erin a kiss. I
like being able to talk about things like this without getting upset about them. I
like how calm you are. You don t get your back up about things.
Usually not. My natural demeanor is calm. She glanced at the menu and
said, Pumpkin ravioli for me.
That was quick. Katie spent a few minutes looking at her menu, and when
she looked up, Erin was smiling at her.
I like to watch you look at a menu. I can see your eyes flitting across things
and then coming back again. It s like you re thinking about each dish and how
it ll taste.
I am. Now tell me how you re feeling before I have to slap our waiter around
again.
Erin shook her head, fairly sure that Katie would do just that if she was
pushed. I m sure I m down after seeing Miss Blake. She s going to die soon, and
I don t want to have to sign her death certificate. I d like to be one of the many
mourners, not the attending physician.
I think you re going to have to get busy and take some proactive steps. You re
going to have to go to the people you contracted with and lay your cards on the
table.
That kills my appetite. She dropped her head. They re the ones who insisted
on making the contract so&
 Unconscionable.
No, that s not true. No one forced me to do this. I had other options.
Don t think about it now. Let s enjoy our day and put business aside.
Erin tried to fix a smile on her face, but it wasn t very effective.
Come on, now. Katie gave her a devilish grin. I m going to come over there
and tickle you.
 I m not ticklish, remember?

Katie extended her hands and moved her fingers quickly. You will be if I get
my hands on you in public. You ll be giggling like a baby.

After lunch, they went for a walk along the Nashua River, another first for
Katie. It s lovely here, she said, taking Erin s arm and holding it to her body
with both of her hands.
Erin slid her arm away and draped it across Katie s shoulders. I want you to
be closer.
This is even nicer. She snuggled against Erin s body, smiling with contentment.
I fell a little more in love with you today.
You did? Tell me why so I can do more of whatever it was. Erin giggled
when Katie slipped her cold hand under her sweater to tickle her waist. I m not
ticklish!
 Then why are you laughing?
Because you re funny. You get a very cute look on your face when you tickle
me. Now, tell me more about this falling in love. I m very receptive to that.
Well, I ve known you were a generous woman, but I was so touched by the
way you interacted with your old teacher today. I almost cried when you told her
you needed to massage her feet to check on her circulation.
Erin grinned guiltily. I don t think she believes that, either, but everyone
needs to be touched. She smiles so serenely when I rub her feet.
 She loves you.
I love her, too. She s almost like an aunt.
I can see that. Katie noted the tears welling up in Erin s brown eyes. I can
clearly see what a loving woman you are.

Sitting by the river, Katie relaxed into the lounge chair she d made out of
Erin s body. You re very comfortable. Not bony.
No, I m just bony enough to give my flesh some structure, Erin agreed,
chuckling.
You know what I mean. I m all angles and sharp points.
No, you re not. You have some very soft spots. I ve rubbed against them. She
laughed softly. The day you came to pick me up to go to Killington, I almost
drooled when I saw how your soft spots looked in that sweater.
I changed three times to make sure I was wearing something that would
catch your eye. I could tell you liked my& sweater.
I barely noticed the sweater. Was I really obvious?
Yeah. Just like I planned. You re pretty easy.

I don t have a lot of experience in this, you know. I m a little slow
sometimes.
You re not slow at all. You re cute. She turned her head and nuzzled against
Erin s face, waiting for a kiss. When she got it, she asked, Do you know why
you re falling for me? You are still falling for me, aren t you?
Yeah. No change there. Erin dipped her head and kissed all of the bare skin
she could reach. It s awfully fun falling for you, Katie.
I know. She cuddled closer. There s nothing better, is there?
Nothing I ve experienced. I m not going to try opiates, so I think falling in
love will be a peak experience for me.
I m not into opiates myself. Liquor isn t an opiate, is it?
Not unless they ve found a new chemical in it.
